Betrayed (House Of Night Book. 2) Review #25

Authors: P.C & Kristin Cast
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Pages: 310
Rating:

ATTENTION EVERYONE, In celebration of this being my 25th review on my site, I'M HOLDING A CONTEST. That's right, you heard me correctly, a contest. The book I will be giving away is The Summoning by Kelly Armstrong. PLEASE READ MY NEXT POST, after this, BECAUSE IT WILL HAVE DETAIL IN HOW you can enter the contest. Thanks everyone :) Now on to the review!!!
Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird has managed to settle in at the House of Night. She’s come to terms with the vast powers the vampyre goddess, Nyx, has given her, and is getting a handle on being the new Leader of the Dark Daughters. Best of all, Zoey finally feels like she belongs--like she really fits in. She actually has a boyfriend…or two. Then the unthinkable happens: Human teenagers are being killed, and all the evidence points to the House of Night. While danger stalks the humans from Zoey’s old life, she begins to realize that the very powers that make her so unique might also threaten those she loves. Then, when she needs her new friends the most, death strikes the House of Night, and Zoey must find the courage to face a betrayal that could break her heart, her soul, and jeopardize the very fabric of her world.
So if you read my review on Marked, which is the first book in the House of Night series, then you might have noticed the difference between this books rating and Marked book rating. I gave Marked a Maura's Choice and I gave Betrayed (the sequel) a 3 stars. Why? Why did this one get a lower rating? Well I'll tell you. But first I'm going to positively say that the House Of Night series is a interesting series that gives a new spin on the vampire genre and even though this review will have mainly negative things, I don't want to discourage ANYONE from reading this. I still highly recommend this series, I just didn't like this book in the series. Also I give props to P.C & Kristin Cast for doing a interesting, different way of writing then most teen books on the YA market right now. I feel that the two authors of this book were able to really write the characters as if they were teenagers. But even so, the writing has a few flaws that I'm going to point out. I really hate giving bad reviews, but I want to be as honest as I can be about my thoughts on the book.
First off, the book is too slow. I found Marked, way more fast pasted then this one. At times I really had to force myself to continue reading. The thing is, the house of night series really lacks action. I said this in my previous review and I'll say it again. When I first began to read this, I was praying that there would be more action then Marked. Sadly, even though there was a bit more action, my prays failed.
Secondly, Characters. Some of these complaints are just personal observations. The one thing I hate that P.C & Kristin did was they made Zoey tell you things, instead of the character and author showing you it. Meaning I feel, now, that I don't really know Zoey. She tells me all these things about her personality, but I have yet to witness her portraying any of it. Also Zoey always say she is real dorky, but I feel she is more preppy. I don't want to label or anything, but that is what I feel. I feel Zoey's character hasn't developed properly. I really don't feel she's changed much from when she was first Marked. Yes, she has stop the whole: "Vampires wear all black" thing, but she still feels the same somehow. That's just how I feel. Also I feel that Erik and Zoey's love is underdeveloped. Like I don't feel any love, at all. I find it annoying how she goes back and forth between Erik, Heath, and Loren. Though I do feel a connection between her and Loren. Also I find Heath, less annoying in this book. I'm actually rooting for him and Zoey.
Another thing is Damien and Jack, there relation is going way to fast.

Thirdly, the writing. I don't think I've read a book that has used so much swear words in my life. I understand that we're teenagers and this book is directed to us, but could you please tone it down a bit. Another thing about the writing is the authors add things at the last minute that was never mentioned before, and you are like: what the hell?

Fourthly, the ending kind of seem sort of silly. I know this is fiction, but it just seem silly.

I know this review is 98% negative, but I still love this series. I feel that the first book was great, but the second one defiently didn't live up to it's expectation. Also series/books are never 100% perfect and I think that as a Book Reviewer, or anyone, it's important to point out the faults.

Someone interviewed me :)

So Yesterday Kirthi from Pages contacted me and ask if I would be willing to do a interview for her site. I was so excited and happy that she asked me this. I've never been asked to do a interview before so I said yes. I answered her questions and now on her site the interview is up. If you would like to check it out, then go here !!! Also I highly recommend checking out Kirthi site because it's amazing :) yay, now I'm in squealish-kind of mood :)

"Cathy's Ring: Book Three Book Review #24"

Author: Sean Stewart & Jordan Weisman
Publisher: Running Press Kids
Pages: 149
Rating:
Cathy cannot manage to find more than a few days to relax in her hectic (and mortal) life—she barely has time to put the mystery surrounding her father to rest before she finds herself targeted by a group of Ancestor Lu’s professional killers!Recognizing she is a serious threat to everyone in her life, Cathy makes plans to leave town. But her friends, Emma, Pete, Victor, and, surprisingly, Jun, unite to convince Cathy that they must finish Lu once and for all to have any chance at peace—mortal or immortal. In order to defeat Lu, the friends must come together in a way they never have before.Meanwhile—unbeknownst to Cathy—Victor has made the ultimate sacrifice hoping it will bring him closer to a normal relationship with Cathy. But when Victor is seriously wounded and Cathy finds herself attracted to another mortal with similar feelings for her, Cathy’s world turns upside down and she is forced to make a decision about her future with Victor, while his life hangs by a thread. What will Cathy decide, and how will their epic battle with Lu play out? Find out in the newest adventure-packed installment of the Cathy story!

Cathy's Ring almost got a Maura's Choice like it's predecessor, Cathy's Key. But I felt that Cathy's Ring started off really slowly and the ending was good but not how I would of liked it to end. I won't give any spoilers away, but I wish the ending, and maybe this book all together, would have had more action in it. I felt it was lacking in that, and the ending was one where the books ends but you know the world continues and you'll just have to imagine what will happen next without knowing completely. I don't think there will be a 4th book, I wish there was. Like I mention before the book started off a bit slow but then it picks up and it's just as fast paste as the the other two Cathy books. This book doesn't have you investigating anything really, which I was kind of sad about, you just read it like a normal book. Like the other two books it's in a diary kind of format with illustrations/doodles and words on each page. Which makes the book look attractive and entertaining. The best thing about the Cathy series, other then the interactive part of it, is the look and format of the book. The books are laid out in a way that is appealing to audience and will have anyone want to read it, even if you think it's not your type of book. I don't really have any complaints about it other then it's a bit slow, and then the ending. I also don't have anything else to say that hasn't been said in my previous review of Cathy's Key. I mean this series was wonderful and I recommend it to anyone. It's a easy read series, but is entertaining and will leave you wanting more. The illustrations are fabulous and the writing and dialogue are perfect. Many times throughout this book I found myself laughing out loud at some of the dialogue. I promise that you wont regret reading this series.

Once a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough review #23

Author: Carolyn MacCulloug
Publisher: Clarion Books
Pages: 292
Rating:

"Your daughter will be one of the most powerful we have ever seen in this family. She will be a beacon for us all."
Tamsin Greene comes from a long line of witches, and on the day she was born, her grandmother proclaimed she would be one of the most Talented among them. Which makes it all the more difficult that Tamsin's magic never arrrived. Now, seventeen years later, she avoids her family as much as possible, spending most of the year at a boarding school in Manhattan, where she can at least pretend to be normal. But her summers are spent at home, working at her family's book store/magic shop in upstate New York. One night at the end of the summer, just before her return to school, a handsome professor from New York University arrives in the shop and mistakes Tamsin for her extremely Talented older sister, Rowena. For once, it's Tamsin who's being looked at with awe and admiration, and before she can stop herself, she agrees to find a family heirloom for him that was lost more than a century ago. But the search--and the stranger-prove to be more sinister than they'd appeared, ultimately sending Tamsin on a treasure hunt through time that will unlock the truth about her Talent, unearth the past sins of her family, and unleash a power so strong and so vengeful that it could destroy them all.

WOW! I don't have one complaint about this book. It got a bit slow during the end, but other then that I've got nothing. Nothing I tell you. I adored this book, it has everything in it that will make all the readers engaged and enjoying it. It's fast paced, well written, well described, and has understandable, lovable characters. Carolyn MacCullough did a fantastic job in writing this book. If you've lost hope in the fantasy genre or are getting tired of it, Once a Witch will pull you back in. It will also make readers excited to read more. My favorite thing about this book is Tamsin is such a realistic character. I seriously think that if Tamsin and this situation were real, Tamsin would of done just that. Or maybe anyone would act the way she did. Tamsin doesn't act cowardly or brave from the start, no she acts confused. I think that if I were in a situation like that I would act the same as she does. Also her problem of being left out and feeling forgetten if very understandable and I know many people *especially with siblings* have gone through this one time in there life. Also this is the first book where the describing and writing was so well done that you understand every, single thing thats happening. Also the plot isn't predicatable so you keep guessing and figuring out things to the end. I highly recommend this book, it was a enjoyable read and I'll be looking out for the sequel.

Invisible Line By Mary Amato Review #22

Author: Mary Amato
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Pages: 299
Released: November 24th, 2009
Rating:
An upbeat teen with a talent for drawing and soccer who hails from the wrong side of the tracks learns to bloom where he's planted. When seventh grader Trevor moves to the trashy Hedley Gardens project with his single-parent mom and younger siblings, he decides "it's going to be my year." Entering a new school in a rich neighborhood, Trevor is accidently placed in an advanced science class. Encouraged by the eccentric teacher to discover the world of mushrooms, Trevor applies humor and evasive tactics to fit in. He draws original designs on his classmates' shoes, and he tries out for an elite soccer team knowing he can't pay the fees. However, Trevor's plans for success derail after the star soccer player sabotages him. Narrating in the present tense, Trevor instantly engages readers with a resilient and infectious can-do attitude that eventually enables him to turn the tables on his rival. Amato's mushroom metaphor aptly fits her young hero, who emerges from unpromising surroundings by following his mom's advice "to rise above it."
Thanks to Beth from Good Man Media ! I got to read a ARC of Invisible Lines By Mary Amato. WOW am I glad that Beth contacted me at first I was very iffy because it didn't seem like my type of book, also it's rated for younger kids not teens, but once I started reading I forgot all my worries. I mean I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR YOUNGER KIDS AND TEENS A ND EVEN ADULTS. I mean the book is such a realistic view of the world. It has realstic dialogue too. Mary Amato tackles a lot of issues that are big in our world. For example: Bullying, not getting everything we want, domestic violence, and ect. This book was simply amazing. It's fast paced and is funny. Trevor is a very relatable character, he has problems that most of us face: trying to fit in and not having a dad around 24/7. Trevor learns that it doesn't matter if your rich or poor or where you come from. Also you shouldn't judge people on status either. I'd probably could write 10 pages of what I liked but you guys probably would get bored so all I'm going to say is I seriously recommend this book. I had a bad week this week, mainly bullying issues, so when I read Trevor's story I could relate to Trevor somewhat and I really liked his mother's advice to raise above it. The next time I face my bulliers I'm going to raise above it. The only complaints I have is I wish they could of had less science stuff *even though I do realize that was a main part in the story* because I'm not smart in that area so it was hard to keep up and understand it. The other thing I wish the bullying could of started earlier between Xander and Trevor then later. That all I have to complain about. Now who is going to read Invisible Line when it comes out?

I'm addicted to the t.v series and decided to try out the books.
After getting mysteriously kicked out of boarding school, Serena Van der Woodsen returns to Manhattan's Upper East Side, where the posh townhouses, designer threads and exclusive parties rival her complete and utter fabulousness. All eyes are on S but will her former best friend Blair be willing to share the spotlight?

I've heard so many good reviews about this so I decided to try it out. Times are hard in the mountain city of Fellsmarch. Reformed thief Han Alister will do almost anything to eke out a living for himself, his mother, and his sister Mari. Ironically, the only thing of value he has is something he can't sell. For as long as Han can remember, he's worn thick silver cuffs engraved with runes. They're clearly magicked-as he grows, they grow, and he's never been able to get them off. While out hunting one day, Han and his Clan friend, Dancer catch three young wizards setting fire to the sacred mountain of Hanalea. After a confrontation, Han takes an amulet from Micah Bayar, son of the High Wizard, to ensure the boy won't use it against them. Han soon learns that the amulet has an evil history-it once belonged to the Demon King, the wizard who nearly destroyed the world a millennium ago. With a magical piece that powerful at stake, Han knows that the Bayars will stop at nothing to get it back. Meanwhile, Raisa ana'Marianna, Princess Heir of the Fells, has her own battles to fight. She's just returned to court after three years of relative freedom with her father's family at Demonai camp - riding, hunting, and working the famous Clan markets. Although Raisa will become eligible for marriage after her sixteenth name-day, she isn't looking forward to trading in her common sense and new skills for etiquette tutors and stuffy parties. Raisa wants to be more than an ornament in a glittering cage. She aspires to be like Hanalea-the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. But it seems like her mother has other plans for her--plans that include a suitor who goes against everything the Queendom stands for.

She doesn't see dead people, but…She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next…

Immortal By Gillian Shied Review #21

Author: Gillian Shields
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Pages: 368
Rating:

Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, housed in a Gothic mansion on the bleak northern moors, is elite, expensive, and unwelcoming. When Evie Johnson is torn away from her home by the sea to become the newest scholarship student, she is more isolated than she could have dreamed. Strict teachers, snobbish students, and the oppressive atmosphere of Wyldcliffe leave Evie drowning in loneliness. Evie's only lifeline is Sebastian, a rebellious, mocking, dangerously attractive young man she meets by chance. As Evie's feelings for Sebastian grow with each secret meeting, she starts to fear that he is hiding something about his past. And she is haunted by glimpses of a strange, ghostly girl—a girl who is so eerily like Evie, she could be a sister. Evie is slowly drawn into a tangled web of past and present that she cannot control. And as the extraordinary, elemental forces of Wyldcliffe rise up like the mighty sea, Evie is faced with an astounding truth about Sebastian, and her own incredible fate.

Positives: It was fast paced, a bit interesting but not original and Agne's journal entries and character development was the best part of the whole book. I mean if this book was only focused on Agne and her journal then I probably would have given this book 5 stars. She is the only character who really has any development. Sebastian has some too. Now Negatives on to the of this book. There is a lot. I really hate giving bad reviews but if it come to that I will. Where do I start? First off the dialog was unrealistic and cheesey. The book was lacking good writing. The writing basically dragged the whole plot down the drain. The plot was interesting but the writing brought down the whole book. The romance was rushed. Evie's character wasn't developed much, especially her thoughts so when it came to a emotional part in the book the emotions were lacking. I mean when Sebastian and Evie fought, instead of feeling anger and understanding Evie's character, I laughed. Stuff was added randomly. Spoiler: Like when Sarah was a friend one moment and then the next she was able to see things, like the future. Like they never hinted at it. I don't remember the author hinting at it when I read it. Another thing is theres to much plot events which make it confusing. The ending ended with not all the events wrapped up. Meaning there will be a sequel. I will read the sequel hoping that it's better. I think this book could of had so much potential if it was worked out better and had lesser plot events. Also if the writing was written better. I felt Gillian Shields didn't really understand a teenagers mind. I mean I felt she didn't write for a teenage audience. I mean when she wrote adult characters in Immortals they sounded like adults but when she wrote teen characters it just was so unrealistic and cheesey. The whole first meeting with Sebasistian was to quick and cheesy. I just didn't enjoy this book. This book would get good, then fall, get good, then fall. I don't know it just wasn't my type of thing.

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the other districts in line by forcing them to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight-to-the-death on live TV. One boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and sixteen are selected by lottery to play. The winner brings riches and favor tohis or her district. But that is nothing compared to what the Capitol wins: one more year of fearful compliance with its rule. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her impoverished district in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead beforeƂ—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Tamsin Greene comes from a long line of witches, and on the day she was born, her grandmother proclaimed she would be one of the most Talented among them. Strange things are happening in Skeleton Creek... and Ryan and Sarah are trying to find out why. When the first book ended, Ryan and Sarah were trapped in a deadly darkness. In the second book, more of the mystery is revealed…as well as Ryan and Sarah’s fate. To give anything else away would be...criminal.

Without the evil vampire Bishop ruling over the town of Morganville, the resident vampires have made major concessions to the human population. With their newfound freedoms, Claire Danvers and her friends are almost starting to feel comfortable again... Now Claire can actually concentrate on her studies, and her friend Eve joins the local theatre company. But when one of Eve's castmates goes missing after starting work on a short documentary, Eve suspects the worst. Claire and Eve soon realize that this film project, whose subject is the vampires themselves, is a whole lot bigger-and way more dangerous-than anyone suspected.

I asked Rachel Caine to sign my Lord of Misrule book, which is the fifth book in the Morganville Vampire Series which she did. And I thank her so much because she's my absolute favorite author and Morganville Vampire Series is my favorite book series out there right now. But asawell as signing my fifth book she gave me, a ARC, the 7th book in the series, Fade Out . Which doesn't come out till November 3rd. Sadly I will not be reviewing it before it comes out :( since I'm still reading the fifth book. Though the 7th book is a stand alone. But I'm sure, as all the other Morganville Vampire books , that it will be awesome. I highly recommend this series or pick up the 7th book when it comes out. Anyways here's the two pictures of the signing of Fade Out book and Lord Of Misrule book.
