The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey Review #88

Author: Melissa Grey
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Pages: 357
Source: Amazon Canada
Buy: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / Book Depository/ Chapters/Indigo
Rating: 3.8
Beneath the streets of New York City live the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins. Age-old enchantments keep them hidden from humans. All but one. Echo is a runaway pickpocket who survives by selling stolen treasures on the black market, and the Avicen are the only family she's ever known. Echo is clever and daring, and at times she can be brash, but above all else she's fiercely loyal. So when a centuries-old war crests on the borders of her home, she decides it's time to act. Legend has it that there is a way to end the conflict once and for all: find the Firebird, a mythical entity believed to possess power the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be no easy task, though if life as a thief has taught Echo anything, it's how to hunt down what she wants . . . and how to take it. But some jobs aren't as straightforward as they seem. And this one might just set the world on fire.
The one aspect of The Girl at Midnight that captivated me the most, while reading, was the use of foreign words (example : tsundoku and callipygian). The words were so beautifully interwoven into the novel and reflected the adventure Echo and her friends faced while travelling to different parts of the world (Japan, New York and Taipei to name a few).

Grey's novel, I admit, took me a while to get hooked onto (maybe about 200 pages in I was addicted) and the ending was fabulously done. The ending had just enough action and excitement that you could not put the book done. I literally ploughed through 150 pages in one sitting.

Echo's world mixes real life settings with paranormal atmospheres (think The Mortal Instrument series) and was well built. I, as a reader, had no trouble understanding the Avicen and Drakharin myth and why they were at war with one another. The world Melissa Grey built was easy to get lost into and I was constantly cheering for Echo and the team. My only complaint is that I wished the Avicen were better described. I had a hard time with picturing what they looked like.

Echo was a well developed character. She goes from feeling like an outsider within the Avicen to belonging to a family of her own. I loved both Echo's rebelliousness and snarky-ness. Echo's troubled past is hinted at in the first book and I hope we, as readers, learn more in the sequel.

Echo, in the first half of the book, is dating Rowan. Rowan is an Avicen and a Warhawk so his loyalty is, obviously, torn in half. A part of him wants to be faithful (and protective) towards Echo and the other half wants to follow through on his duties of being a Warhawk. Eventually Echo falls in love with Caius. Rowan and Echo's relationship do not overshadow Caius and Echo's relationship which is nice. However, I would have liked to seen more of Rowan interacting with Echo because he felt more like a background character in Echo's life.

My favourite characters were: Dorian, Jasper and Ivy. I absolutely loved how these three interacted with one another and was excited whenever a chapter containing the three came up. I definitely thought of Alec, Magnus and Jace's relationship (from The Mortal Instruments) while reading about Caius, Jasper and Dorian's relationship.  I really liked Ivy's and Dorian's relationship. Chapters were told in different character's POV. This allowed the readers to see both Dorian's and Ivy's perspectives on certain events. Dorian is angered and traumatized over events that have happened in his past and takes it out on Ivy who eventually forgives him (even though what Dorian did was horrendous) because staying angry or acting meaner brings about no end.

Due to the multiple character views the readers learn Caius's true identity way before Echo does. I think it would have been neat and a great plot twist to seen the readers learn Caius's true identity the same time Echo does.

The big plot twist at the end wasn't that shocking however, it was nicely done and made the book more interesting.

Overall: I really enjoyed The Girl at Midnight especially the last half of the book. I am looking forward to the sequel :D

How do you write your reviews
I just sit down and write them. While writing, I remember all of the points I had felt while reading the book I am writing a review on. Honestly, I am starting to think I should take notes while reading the books. However, I feel if I do that I will distract myself from fully appreciating the book I am reading.

It used to be an insane asylum, a place to lock up "troubled" young women long ago. And a restless, wicked spirit is still at play--and it doesn't want defiant girls like Delia to go anywhere. So the house kills her. Now Delia is a ghost, trapped in her creepy home forever. The Elite by Kiera Cass (Selection #2) Review #87

Author: Kiera Cass
Publisher: Harper Teen
Pages: 323 (paperback)
Source: Chapters :D
Links: Amazon / Barnes and Noble/ Book Depository / Chapters
Rating: 4/5
The Selection began with thirty-five girls. Now with the group narrowed down to the six Elite, the competition to win Prince Maxon's heart is fiercer than ever—and America is still struggling to decide where her heart truly lies. Is it with Maxon, who could make her life a fairy tale? Or with her first love, Aspen? America is desperate for more time. But the rest of the Elite know exactly what they want—and America's chance to choose is about to slip away.
I definitely enjoyed The Elite a lot more then I did The Selection. Out of all three books, this one was by far my favourite. The cover is absolute breath-taking and I felt a lot more action happened in this novel then in it's predecessor.
I surprisingly found myself falling in love with Aspen in The Elite. In my review of The Selection (click here) I talked about how Aspen was annoying and dragged the book. However, I found myself more drawn to him in this book and wished there was more scenes of him.

How do you organize your books? Either at home on your bookshelves or on your reading-device, or on your bookish platform like Goodreads,Leafmarks or Booklikes.-Unconventional Book Views

I use to organize my bookshelf by authour name and series. However, as of lately my bookshelf is very disorganized and nothing is alphabetically correct haha. Thus, I rely on memory of cover art to find certain series or books when I am searching for them once more.

I don't really use electronic devices (I love physical books) so my kobo is disorganized as well.

I LOVE GOODREADS. On Goodreads I sort books by read and currently reading. I also mark books in my wish list. I also have in previous years marked books by the year I read them (ex; read-2014, read-2013, read-2012). This is a good track record of what books I have read and in what year I read them. I also really love the progress option on goodreads.

I  don't really use Booklikes and I did not know what Leafmarks was until today haha!!

Musing Mondays- May 11, 2015

(Image from A Daily Rhythm)

Musing Mondays is a meme created by A Daily Rhythm in which we chose and answer a prompt and then answer a random question of the week.
Up Next I Think I will read...

I already bought a copy of The Heir (Selection #4) by Kiera Cass and Velvet by Temple West comes out this week :D Images come from Goodreads.
This Week's Random Question
Do you have a “kindred” reading buddy — someone who very closely shares your taste in books? If not, do you wish you did?
Not really. Most of my friends do not read :( and the ones that do have different taste in books. I have one friend who loves Cassandra Clare's books as much as I do though. Both of us are excited for the upcoming Shadowhunter T.V series and have been talking a lot about that lately.

I wish I could have a "kindred" reading buddy (or will find one soon) because then I could actually express my excitement for fictional characters and have them understand what in the world I am talking about.

What is your answer to this question?

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken Review #86

Author: Alexandra Bracken
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Pages: 488
Source: Chapters
Links: Amazon/Barnes and Noble/Chapters/ Book Depository
Rating: 4/5
When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control. Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones. When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents. When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living. Image and Bio come from Goodreads
Where do I even begin? The world building was freaking unbelievable in this novel. I immediately got hooked and emotionally connected to the USA Ruby found herself living in. The horrors these children faced and the traumatization they received was really well described and as a reader I felt absolutely shocked at times. All the characters were super believable and their individual personalities really stood out. As a reader all I wanted to do was help the characters out of their situation and the life predicaments they were facing. Alexandra Bracken's writing, within the first 50 pages, showed how messed up, and dystopian, the United States has become.  I do not think I have ever read a dystopian novel that has introduced the story world as well as Bracken did.

The time has come for one winner to be crowned. When she was chosen to compete in the Selection, America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown—or to Prince Maxon's heart. But as the end of the competition approaches, and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realizes just how much she stands to lose—and how hard she'll have to fight for the future she wants. Image and Bio from Goodreads
Thoughts: Finished The Elite and bought The One right after :)
Princess Eadlyn has grown up hearing endless stories about how her mother and father met. Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won the heart of Prince Maxon—and they lived happily ever after. Eadlyn has always found their fairy-tale story romantic, but she has no interest in trying to repeat it. If it were up to her, she'd put off marriage for as long as possible. But a princess's life is never entirely her own, and Eadlyn can't escape her very own Selection—no matter how fervently she protests. Eadlyn doesn't expect her story to end in romance. But as the competition begins, one entry may just capture Eadlyn's heart, showing her all the possibilities that lie in front of her . . . and proving that finding her own happily ever after isn't as impossible as she's always thought. Image and Bio from Goodreads
Thoughts: I am so excited to read this...just got to finish The One first. I love the cover and I absolutely love the book trailer and the video interviews they did with some of the young men competing.

Thoughts: I saw bloggers talking about this in the book community and loved the bio. I also read some of the sample pages on Amazon and when I saw the words Taipei :) I knew for sure I wanted to read this book. This book also takes the character, Echo, traveling (from Taipei to Japan :D).

How do you decide what books to read? -So Many Books, So Little Time
Usually by reading or hearing about the book synopsis whether it be online, on the back of a book, on book blogs or youtube videos. If the plot piques my interest then I will try to read the first few chapters and if I end up liking it then I will find myself reading the whole book.

Sometimes book covers and book trailers make me want to randomly pick up a book (without look at the bio).

How do you guys decide?

Why? I loved the two other books in the series (Ink and Rain). Whenever I read these books I am reminded of my time in Japan. Also, I LOVE THE COVER :D Storm is my favourite cover out of all three books. The cover just stands out and in a good way!! I loved the cover for Ink and Rain however, I would not mind seeing them redone to be similar as this one.

This Weeks Random Question
What would you do if you wanted to buy a book for someone, but didn’t know what they like to read? Would you ask them? Would you choose something you, yourself, like? How would you go about buying them something?
I am more of a gift-card-kind-of girl when it comes to giving book-related gifts. I never know what people want (unless they have blatantly told me) , or if they already own (or have read) a certain book. I also rather borrow out books I like instead of buy them for other people in case they are not as fond as them as I am.

How would you guys answer this question??

May 2015 Favourites

So the past week has been quiet hectic for me. I haven't really posted much because a) I was finishing off finals b) packing and moving out of my dorm c) leasing out an apartment for the fall and d) taking an airplane back home for the summer. However, now that I am free once again I wanted to blog. I do not have any book reviews or books that I bought this week to show off :D So I decided instead to show you what books I am most looking forward to in May 2015:

The Fill-in Boyfriend by Kasie West (May 5, HarperTeen)
When Gia Montgomery's boyfriend, Bradley, dumps her in the parking lot of her high school prom, she has to think fast. After all, she'd been telling her friends about him for months now. This was supposed to be the night she proved he existed. So when she sees a cute guy waiting to pick up his sister, she enlists his help. The task is simple: be her fill-in boyfriend— two hours, zero commitment, a few white lies. After that, she can win back the real Bradley. The problem is that days after prom, it's not the real Bradley she's thinking about, but the stand-in. The one whose name she doesn't even know. But tracking him down doesn't mean they're done faking a relationship. Gia owes him a favor and his sister intends to see that he collects: his ex-girlfriend's graduation party — three hours, zero commitment, a few white lies. Just when Gia begins to wonder if she could turn her fake boyfriend into a real one, Bradley comes waltzing back into her life, exposing her lie, and threatening to destroy her friendships and her new-found relationship. Image and Bio from Goodreads
Thoughts: Honestly I am just in love with synopsis. It sounds intriguing and immediately made me intrigued on how everything will turn out in the end.

The Cage by Megan Shepherd (May 26, Balzer & Bray)
The Maze Runner meets Scott Westerfeld in this gripping new series about teens held captive in a human zoo by an otherworldly race. From Megan Shepherd, the acclaimed author of The Madman's Daughter trilogy. When Cora Mason wakes in a desert, she doesn't know where she is or who put her there. As she explores, she finds an impossible mix of environments—tundra next to desert, farm next to jungle, and a strangely empty town cobbled together from different cultures—all watched over by eerie black windows. And she isn't alone. Four other teenagers have also been taken: a beautiful model, a tattooed smuggler, a secretive genius, and an army brat who seems to know too much about Cora's past. None of them have a clue as to what happened, and all of them have secrets. As the unlikely group struggles for leadership, they slowly start to trust each other. But when their mysterious jailer—a handsome young guard called Cassian—appears, they realize that their captivity is more terrifying than they could ever imagine: Their captors aren't from Earth. And they have taken the five teenagers for an otherworldly zoo—where the exhibits are humans. As a forbidden attraction develops between Cora and Cassian, she realizes that her best chance of escape might be in the arms of her own jailer—though that would mean leaving the others behind. Can Cora manage to save herself and her companions? And if so . . . what world lies beyond the walls of their cage? Image and Bio from Goodreads
Thoughts: I am a big fan of Megan Shepherd's The Madman's Daughter Series. When I saw another, new, book was coming out from her I was really excited.

The Heir (The Selection #4) by Kiera Cass (May 5, HarperTeen)
Image and Bio is from Goodreads
Thoughts: I am really excited about this one. I loved the book trailer & all the videos that have so far accompanied it (the interview with certain boys from the new selection). I just need to finish The Elite and The One first haha.
